HOLIDAYS IN AGHIOS
NIKOLAOS
Probably the oldest and certainly the most
famous of Crete’s many holiday resorts, since it’s growth in the
60’s and 70’s Aghios Nikolaos (Ag. Nik) has maintained a summer charm
all of it’s own. With a delightful town centre, it’s bottomless
inland lake, it’s pleasant harbour and marina, plus several good
beaches it really has got what it takes for a holiday town, with sun,
sea and sand in plentiful supply. The town of
Aghios Nikolaos has a wide range of Cafes,
Bars and Restaurants to meet almost every taste. In recent years the
town has grown as an administrative centre for the province of
Lasithi, and is also home to the principal hospital for the East of
the island.
Because of it’s well tried formula it is still popular with regular
holiday makers, and because of it’s cosmopolitan outlook is an
excellent choice for first time visitors. The town
of Aghios Nikolaos is a good holiday
base for exploring the East of the island, and with a hire car
rented for a few days many tourist sites can be visited, especially
the inland villages of Kritsa, with it’s olive farm, the ancient
sites at Lato, and Driros, or down to Gournia. Visits to all the
wonderful beaches around the bay of Mirambellou, places such as
Ammoudara, Vathi, and Istron are highly recommended. If you wish
there are also a wealth of traditional villages Pirgos, Kato Horio,
Meseleri being just a few.
A visit to the old administrative town of Neapoli, with it’s Law
Courts and traditional square, then on to visit the Lassithi Plateau,
with it’s ancient windmills, and wonderful agricultural products,
makes a memorable day out, with an opportunity to see the island as
it once was, you can also visit the churches of Moni Kremastou, Moni
Kroustalenias, and Moni Violanis. Around the peninsula there are
visits to Fourni, Kastelli, Karidi, Elounda, or over to the charming
little harbour at Limin Sisiou, there really is too much for just
one holiday.
If you enjoy spending some time on a boat there are enjoyable trips
to the Island of Spinalonga, which was Europe’s last leper colony,
and the subject of a recent novel called The Island, all in all
despite it’s long established reputation Aghios Nikolaos still has
much to offer today’s tourist or holidaymaker.
